Background of UMNSRC
UM North-South Research Centre (UMNSRC) is an academic research organisation, established in 2019, to advance inter-discplinary scholarship on political, economic, and social developments, in comparative perspective, involving developed and emerging economies. To facilitate this objective, four research centres were brought under UMNRSC's umbrella, that is the Centre of Latin American Studies, Malaysia-Korea Research Centre, Malaysia-Japan Research Centre and Africa-Asia Development University Network.
UMNRSC is primarily dedicated to providing informed public policy debates and recommendations. This centre aims to serve as a resource centre and policy advisor to the government, the corporate sector, and the diplomatic corp on issues relating to business, political economy, social, and strategic or bilateral relations. This objective is to be achieved.
UMNSRC's Core Activities
- Serve as locale for post-graduate research, with a focus on comparative, inter-disciplinary scholarship.
- Identify and fill research gaps on key social- and science-based problems, common in countries, and reviewed in comparative perspective.
- Provide accessible knowledge that informs policy debates on key problems in Malaysia, but from a comparative perspective.
- Promote awareness, through seminars, public lectures, and speaking engagements with the domestic and international media to enhance public understanding on issues pertaining to Malaysia and other countries.
- Create opportunities for UM faculty and students to build research networks with foreign tertiary institutions.
- Invite prominent academics to undertake research on Malaysia, and in a comparative basis, which are of importance to the institute.
- Enhance publication of monographs and journal articles, with an emphasis on inter-disciplinary and comparative research.
- Train post-graduate candidates in comparative research, with a focus on inter-disciplinary projects.
